Love can overcome all

The Holy Spirit is a refining fire, testing what we do by God’s will and God’s ways, but allowing us to have free rule in our lives even to our own detriment. We can do miracles with the power of the Holy Spirit, but we can also do ourselves in if we are stubborn and refuse God’s guidance. With Jesus Christ’s physical presence now missing, we listen to his words of love and direction as given to us by God’s Holy Spirit.

God is our protector

Jesus’ high priestly prayer is prayed for the disciples and for us who follow after them. Jesus was concerned that we always be protected by God, even though the world will hate his followers. However, God be praised, that we will be kept safe for all of eternity regardless.

Love is our standard

Love is indeed a connection nurtured by God. When we love selflessly, Christ comes into the equation. Then miracles happen.

The Model Shepherd

The most popular ancient depiction of Jesus in the Roman catacombs is as the Good Shepherd, dating from the early third century and perhaps before. The good, or model, or exemplary shepherd has given up his life for us in order to give us life eternal. We need to hear his voice, follow his commands, and live a life that exemplifies Christ care and concern for others.

Revive us again

Repentance is necessary for forgiveness. Christ died to give us forgiveness of our sins, but without our turning from our sins, we make Christ’s death muted and ineffective. The Risen Lord reminded us that we are to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins in his name to all the world.

Reach out and touch someone

Jesus’ disciple Thomas was the foreshadowing of the scientific age we live in today. We have certainties which are actually only probabilities, in mathematical terms. However, we Twenty-first Century people are now aware that the universe that can be seen and measured is finite and has limits. Outside of this universe we have only God and God’s only Son, our Messiah, Jesus Christ in whom we live and move and have our being.

Frightened by reality

Mark’s Gospel account tells the story of terrified women who witness the empty open tomb three days after Jesus’ dead body had been placed there. They see an angelic figure who tell them that Jesus has been raised from the dead. St. Paul’s earlier letter to the church in Corinth tells more details, as do the three later Gospels. The women run away terrified, but the story from them and others apparently begins to spread to the whole world.

Waltzing in on a donkey

Jesus comes into Jerusalem in a lowly procession riding on a donkey on Palm Sunday, being adored by many expecting him to throw of the yoke of the Roman Empire. The he leaves the city, regroups with his disciples, is arrested, and crucified on Good Friday. We now await remembering his rising from the dead on Easter morning.

The beginning of the end

Jesus sees the end of his journey on earth as he hears of the coming of the Greeks to find him right after his entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, realizing his Good News has begun to spread far beyond the Jewish nation. His death will be eminent, but the appearance of the Greeks signals that his message of salvation will be for all people.
